Bloody Norfolk

The disgusting Prat from Prestatyn has added to his impressive collection of Prescottballs with this comment about Norfolk:

"Why would I want to go and live in bloody Norfolk? Nothing good ever came out of bloody Norfolk since Cromwell."

As a former resident of Ely, living just 100 yards from Cromwell's former residence, I should know that Cromwell wasn't born in Norfolk. But I don't think you need to have lived in Cambridgeshire to know that Cromwell was intimately connected with Cambridgeshire, not Norfolk. We'll put it down to Prescott being Welsh and completely and wilfully ignorant of English history.

Colemans mustard, Stephen Fry, Thomas Paine, Cromer crabs, William Cubbit, Norfolk dapple, Alan Partridge, Horatio Nelson, Boudica, Dyson...To name but a few good things that came out of Norfolk.

And we should not forget Norfolk's greatest export, Turkey.

John Prescott ... a former

John Prescott ... a former resident of Wales who objects to a f****** Taff speaking f****** Taff? I don't think he's really in touch with his Welsh side.

That's very interesting. I

That's very interesting. I know three people who are Welsh but completely ignorant of and uninterested in speaking Welsh, and indeed have no patience with the language, yet are proud of Wales and their Welshness when it comes to sport, etc. It is an issue in Wales.

But I wouldn't say appreciation of the Welsh language was a neccesary requisite for being in touch with one's "Welsh side" in modern day, multi-cultural Wales.

From what I've seen, Wales is more varied (dare one say "regional"?), if not more so, than England. The Welsh language thing is just one example. But surely there are many ways of being Welsh. After all, I don't speak old English, and I'm half-Scots, but I'm still English.

Prescott was born in Wales to

Prescott was born in Wales to English parents and the family moved to Yorkshire when he was four so his “Welshness” was only ever paraded on special occasions i.e when attending Labour Party conferences in Wales.

Chris, you’re right about differing attitudes towards the Welsh language among Welsh people but to refer to a supposed compatriot as a f****** taff is unusual since many Welsh people regard “taff” as a pejorative term.

And since the f****** taff in question was Labour MP Denzil Davies who was giving an interview in Welsh on College Green there was a distinct lack of collegiate spirit all round from Prescott!

Do you remember the immortal

Do you remember the immortal lines about Cambridge people?

No, what were they?

No, what were they?

Sorry for giving this random

Sorry for giving this random thought. Oliver Cromwell's origins are interesting. A pity the Prat from Prestatyn didn't know this...

His ancestors came from Wales, he was descended from Catherine Cromwell (sister of Thomas Cromwell) and Morgan ap Williams, a descendent of the Tudor dynasty from Wales. That would make Cromwell a distant cousin of his enemy Charles I. When he was being offered the crown to become King, his supporters traced his family back to the Welsh Kings and also to Owain Tudor, ancestor of Henry VII, Henry VIII, etc. It is a pity the 'Prat from Prestatyn' (apt name) didn't know this - I guess he is ignorant of English history and Welsh history. It is all in Antionia Frasters' book on Crowmell pp.4-15.

Wasn't Cromwell from

Wasn't Cromwell from Huntingdonshire?

He was born in

He was born in Huntingdonshire, now part of Cambridgeshire.
